People were always fascinated with speed, so it’s no surprise that cars which go really, really fast get to be really, really popular. Supercars are incredibly fast, incredibly beautiful, and usually incredibly expensive. I love them and would love some day to own one.
When car began to emerge as something beyond mere transportation, sports cars were born. Sports cars from the late 1940s were not designed only for the road but for competition as well. These vehicles were produced by famous car builders such as Ferrari, Jaguar, Porsche, and Lotus.
Through the 1950’s and 1960’s sports cars evolved, pushing the limits of what is possible. World’s most recognized manufacturers such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Porsche, Aston Martin, and Ford, started to compete very seriously.
1964 was the year that gave birth to famous Ford GT40, a legendary car, generally considered to be the first real supercar. It was also the first American car to beat the Ferrari at their own game (not until 1966) and break the 200mph barrier at LeMans.
1966 gave the world what is considered the first true supercar for the road – Lamborghini Miura. Named after a breed of Spanish fighting bulls, Miura was the first production sports car with a mid-engine layout.
The next few decades brought better technology and many extraordinary feats of engineering. From Ferrari Testarossa to Bugatti Veyron.
The best, fastest and most expensive supercar in the world today is Bugatti Veyron. Veyron costs $1,700,000 and can go 253 mph (407 kmh). An outstanding piece of engineering.
They look great, they drive superbly, and they go faster than anything on the road. Supercars will always be around.
