Honda’s Emergence as a Leader in Pakistan’s Auto Industry

by Joe Carey

The introduction of two extremely popular cars in Pakistan, the Honda Accord and the Honda Civic, at a time when cars with few if any frills were the only ones available, allowed Honda to capture auto consumers pretty rapidly. With its class and luxury Honda promised much more in terms of value and status for an affordable price.

Long before Honda arrived on the car scene in Pakistan, Toyota had introduced several well-established and highly popular models in the automotive industry. Brands like Corona, Corolla, Crown and Mark II were leaders in their own class with other manufacturers like Mazda, Suzuki and Nissan had only a few models serving as poor competition. Toyota had an image of being a highly dependable car that could be resold for high prices in the used car market. Consumers favored Toyota for its practical value and a poor choice of similar cars.

Honda provided an opportunity for car buyers to own a luxurious, high quality car with additional features and trims like power steering and windows. Models by other competing manufacturers did not offer these features and in spite of being less costly, started to see waning sales. Honda now became ever more popular and a once unknown brand was now highly noticeable on the streets and highways in Pakistan. A considerable number of individuals and companies switched from the once preferred Toyota to Honda.

The exquisitely designed exterior and interior of the Honda were difficult qualities for other car manufacturers to compete with, permitting Honda to stay ahead. With a spacious and comfortable interior and fabric seats, intra and inter city traveling became more enjoyable than before. Honda introduced the City in Pakistan to compete effectively in the 1300cc engine capacity market, and once more managed to gain market share from its well established rival, the Corolla. Seeing its success, Honda soon started production of its cars in Pakistan, to better manage its price competitiveness.

Hondas maintained it quality above those of competing cars and soon gained a reputation of being fuel efficient and highly reliable. The well engineered cars provided the impression of driving a bigger vehicle and in a short time Hondas dependability scored closely with Toyota. Maintaining a Honda proved both cheap and easy, apart from the oil change and tune ups common to most cars irrespective of the manufacturer. These qualities complemented the increasing demand for these cars in Pakistans used car market and helped increase its resale value.

Honda has shown itself to be a highly popular, well-rounded car year after year in a relatively small amount of time. A car that is enjoyable to drive, handles well and has a spectacular look, the Honda has constantly managed to electrify car buyers in spite of efforts by competitors to launch new models and makes into the market. Hondas amazing past record is a mark of its future supremacy in Pakistans car industry, a position well deserved and one that will stick for some time to come.
