How To Buy A High Mileage Car

Due to the current economic situation, people are keeping their vehicles for longer and driving them farther. However, when it is time to replace their current car people rarely consider buying a high mileage car. They do not realise that provided a high mileage car has been well cared for it can provide a new owner with several more years of trouble free use. Buying a good high mileage car is not that difficult when you know what to look for.

When looking at older cars, examine the engine carefully for fluid leaks. Check the condition of the oil, if it is low or dirty be wary. If there is evidence of leaks, the oil level is low or the oil is very dirty do not bother to buy the car. These are all signs that the car has not been well maintained. Older cars burn more oil, but should not leak. Check the radiator water, brake fluid and transmission fluid too.

Make sure that the older car has been serviced throughout its life as per the manufacturers’ recommendations. Ideally, an older car should be serviced even more regularly than recommended. If you can find an older car that is being serviced every 3,000 miles or 3 months that is ideal.

When tyres wear unevenly it can be a sign of suspension issues, which can be expensive to repair. As a result, it is important to check the tyres wear pattern as well as checking the tyre tread depth.

During the test-drive listen for any peculiar noises from the gears or clutch. Find out what the cost of a new gearbox or clutch would be and factor that cost into your decision on whether to buy it or not.

Rust is a big problem with older cars, but a more serious problem is water ingress. Check for both rust and water ingress. Once water gets into a car it travels along the cables and can cause expensive electrical systems to fail. Check all the electrical systems, such as, air-conditioning and electric windows are working properly. Electrical systems are sometimes hard and/or expensive to repair.
