The Importance Of Instrument Clusters

by Mike Persson

Every car has a set of instruments in the dashboard. This piece of the dashboard with all of the instruments in it is called an instrument cluster. In some cases, the cluster will include a digital speedometer rather than a mechanically based one.

The control system behind the dashboard is the instrument cluster. It controls all of the power and other signals going to the rest of the dashboard. An instrument cluster’s main purpose is to be the control central for all other output displays and data sources. Advances in dashboard technology have further solidified the need for a central control space. This has become an even greater focus of the instrument cluster.

Digital instrument clusters became popular in the 1980’s and the 1990’s. Though they could be found in many cars at that time, they were likely most notable in luxury cars, including top models such as the Lincoln and Cadillac. Digital instrument clusters have the capability of offering a lot more than could be with traditional mechanical gauges. Some of the array of things that are offered in a digital cluster include a speedometer, trip displays, outside temperature, directions and fuel rates, including how many miles we have left before we run out of gas. Some clusters even offer a traditional mechanical speedometer alongside a digital one

Dashboards in the past were much simpler. As time evolved, the instrument clusters have become more complex as they have added more displays for varying reasons. Some things we have added that make it more complex are heating controls, ventilation, lighting controls and audio controls.

It is more common today to also find a navigation system that uses GPS and is built into the dashboard. There is a constant give and take between designers of dashboards and the technology people who build things to put into those dashboards. The two must combine to create easy to understand and use displays. This could easily add up to a lot of extra money, but for consumers to buy, they need to keep it cost effective.

The instrument clusters are important for the driver as it serves as their primary source of information and focus of attention. They are better now because they appear less complex without compromising the quality of data delivered to the driver.

More and more car companies are providing instrument clusters with advanced solutions without leaving behind the art of ergonomics. Most of them now offer a vast range of uses and an innovative display technology.

There are some gauges that have been left behind in the age of digital display. As they crunch to get everything into the instrument clusters in a way that makes best use of the space and meets all of the criteria of the demanding consumers, designers have decided that gauges such as oil pressure were rarely looked at and could be abandoned, thus freeing up valuable space in the display of the cluster.
