Why Selling Used Cars To Friends Is Never A Good Idea
Just a couple of months back, my neighbour who I was on great terms with, bought my old car. This wasn’t my idea but the man in question approached me when he saw that I’d bought a new car; he wanted to know what I was going to do with the old car.
We had been fairly good friends up until this; we socialised in the local bar a lot and our wives also got on well together. So it seemed like a great idea when he asked if he could buy my old car. Even though he offered a lower price than I originally wanted for the car, I thought it was still a good idea because I wouldn’t have the hassle of trying to sell it. We shook hands and that is when the problems began.
On the evening that this neighbour had bought the car we had a long phone call with him asking all types of odd questions. I realised then that selling to this man was a mistake. It was as if he thought I had done him out of money with some of the questions he was asking me. I was a bit annoyed with this and the call ended with me telling him that he could have the money back if he brought back the car; to which he replied by slamming the phone down. I have no experience with selling used cars but assumed that once the deal is done the deal is done.
One of my other friends came up to me and told me that there were vicious rumours being spread about me by this neighbour. He was telling everyone that would listen that I had cheated him out of a lot of money for a used car that was a piece of junk. However he denied it all when I approached him about it. We haven’t talked since and his wife is now ignoring my missus. My advice to people is never to sell used cars to friends or neighbours.
